Chronic pain afflicts millions of individuals and costs billions of dollars a year. Yet, little progress has been made in finding new effective treatments. In the past 20 years, neuroimaging has provided new insight into how chronic pain affects the central nervous system as well as how treatments modulate the pain condition. The application of neuroimaging has been mainly devoted to the human condition, but recently its application in preclinical models is providing a language of translation between humans and animal models. Dr. Becerra will review the state of the field and potential future applications.
